Today, football is the most popular sport in the world. And of course, every footy fan is absolutely convinced that their team is the best football club in the world.

Determining the top clubs in history, however, is about so much more than subjective fandom. These are the clubs that have stood the test of time, won trophies, and set records.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid is the most successful club in all of football history – by far.

The club has won a smashing 14 European Cups/Champions Leagues, and an equally impressive 35 La Liga titles.

This also happens to make of Real Madrid one of the most valuable clubs in the world.

Right now, the club is valued at over $4 billion.

Barcelona

While Barcelona’s trophy count isn’t nearly as impressive as that of Madrid, they too have for decades enjoyed a place in European football’s golden circle.

Barca have won 26 La Liga titles, 30 Copa del Rey titles, and 5 European Cups/Champions Leagues.

Even though they do currently seem in need of a shake-up, they continue to make headlines and have certainly earned their place among football’s top elite.

Fun fact: they’re well-known for their attractive style of play, which has been lovingly dubbed “tiki-taka”.

Manchester United

Fun fact: they were founded in 1897 by a group of grammar school students.

Liverpool

Liverpool enjoys one of the largest fan bases in the world and have been home to some of the top players. They’ve won 6 European Cups/Champions Leagues, 7 FA Cup titles, and 19 Premier League titles.

Fun fact: Liverpool FC has won only five major titles without a Scotsman involved in the team.

Ajax

Ajax is one of the Netherlands’ most successful football clubs. They’re also known for their youth academy. The academy has produced some of the very best players in the world, including Dennis Bergkamp and Johan Cruyff.

Ajax has won 36 Eredivisie titles, 19 KNVB Cup titles, and 4 European Cups/Champions Leagues.
