Thurso Club Championships - Season 2009-2010 - 27 & 28/02/10

Thurso Squash Club held its Annual Club Championships recently with a good number of participants ready to exert themselves to the punishment of some tough and challenging matches, over the weekend two day event.
With the rankings and draw set in place for each age group, it was to bring some exciting matches that would delight the eager audience.
The youngest player of the tournament, Jamie Henderson has brought a knew ambience to the club due to his regular inclusion within the Scottish Squash setup and training regime. New styles and techniques have become very apparent in the club and, it is through the young lads dedication and imagination that the whole club is gaining experience and expanding their knowledge of the game.
With this in mind, in the final of the Men's event, Jamie was up against tough opposition in Martyn Cook - who is a regular in the closing stages of any local squash tournament.
In the first set Martyn battled well but Jamie's bag was full of too many deceptive and baffling shots that his opponent found it tough to contend, leaving the youngster to lift his first major of his career.

The bashful youngster commented, 'It was great to get the first title under my belt in my home club but delighted that the standard of squash over the weekend was very high and sure it will continue'.
Alistair Miller lifted the Men's plate competition trophy after beating Stevie Spargo.
After a torrid battle in the semi-final of the Over 45 event for Donald Pollard against Stuart Greig that left the crowd dodging for cover, he was looking to cool Number 1 seed of this section, James Henderson's heals and produce the upset of the day.
James had other ideas and after a series of long and punishing rallies, the number 1 had the edge and left Donald chasing for scraps. James eventually went on to win the title with a few points to spare.
Nick Noble is on a master plan to pull himself back to past exploits and triumphs on the squash court - but on this occasion it was Jimmy Cassidy who produced the goods to win the Over 45 plate trophy.
Regular participants, Jimmy Cassidy and Brian Henderson are used to squaring up against each other in more relaxed circumstances, where the equivalent of the Queensberry rules are tolerated, at all times. Not on this occasion, as both were battling against each other in the final of the Over 50's club championships and the gloves were off!

With the match being drawn at 2 sets each, some excellent rallies and quality strokes being produced, the crowd looked on in disbelief as to how much longer both could hold on before their tanks would run out.
Although Brian went into an early lead and came within touching distance of lifting the trophy, it was Jimmy who held his nerve, pulled back a couple of tie-breaker points and found a final burst of energy to jump for joy on his triumph.
Carole Mowat continued her domination in the Ladies' section of this event with a worthy win over Mairi Vines, who proved her regular court time at the club is pulling her closer to the current champion.
Congratulations to everyone who took part, it's great to see such a large group of entrants and thank you to all who refereed and catered over the weekend.
