Thurso Club Championships - Season 2007-2008 - 01, 02 & 03/02/08
For the first time in a number of years, to try and stop the congestion due to the amount of events that take place in the Thurso Squash Club Championships, it was decided to stretch this seasons tournament from a 2 to a 3 day event. Although this new format seemed to work relatively well, a couple of experienced players who managed to reach various finals, are now canvassing for one more extra date to be included in the schedule. The proceedings were started by the Under 15 Boys and Girls' junior matches, in a 'round-robin' style format, where each player battles against each other and the person with the most points wins. Previous junior club championships have hardly notched together a couple of entrants into either of these categories but coaches, Ian Adamson and Sandy Stewart have completed some excellent recruiting work and encouraged a good squad of youngsters to 'have-a-go' at this sport, which bodes well for the future. Some good, tight matches came from the boys section but it was Jamie Henderson who eventually managed to top the table with new recruit, Sean Fraser performing well to lift the runners-up prize. The girls' event was a tough contest, with very few points separating bottom to top and the winner was decided on the last match of the night. It was to be Eilidh Paterson who had the cooler head and held her nerve to secure the title, with Amelia Mackay settling for the runners-up spot. With Jamie Henderson going for the double in the junior events, his opponent, Sean Miller, would always find it difficult to lift the Under 19 boys silverware. This pairing regularly have practice sessions together but after some frantic rallies, battles in the middle of the court and unnecessary ramifications with the official - it was Jamie who came out best, winning by 3 sets to 0. Current holder of the Over 55's trophy, Jimmy Cassidy was in no mood to give up his prized possession. After disposing of Andy Smith in the semi-final, Guy Owen was to be his next obstacle, in the final. The two different styles of play were very apparent in this match-up. Guy, preferring to float and frustrate his opponent with a deft touch into the corners and 'nics', whereas, Jimmy chose the more powerful and energetic method to win points. It was to be the latter style which took precedence this time though, allowing Jimmy to hold onto his trophy for the third year running. Like Jimmy Cassidy, Carole Mowat was also in-line for her third Ladies title in-a-row with only Carole Cameron left to stop her younger opponent from lifting the spoils. But, after a succession of quick fire winning points from Carole M with shots that Carole C couldn't reach - the current holder was in-line for the title and matched Jimmy's achievement. Carole C battled tirelessly until the end and once a couple of niggling injuries have been repaired correctly, Carole M will have a tougher task on her hands. Not to let his son, Jamie grab all the limelight of this event - father, James proceeded into the final of the Mens tournament after a tough match in the semi, which consisted of some long and torcherous rallies - against, Davie Swanson, where he just 'sneaked' through by 3 sets to 1. Fresh from the success of beating the county number 1, Martyn Cook went into his semi-final tie against Colin Paterson as favourite. But, the more experienced and intelligent play of Colin wore the 'young pretender' down in a five set match that ebbed and flowed in various directions. Colin pulled away in the last set, after being 5 points to 1 down, to continue onto the final. Colin's strenuous match versus Martyn left him with very little to offer in the final and James never allowed him an opening to play his usual game. After a short spell, it was to be the older statesman, James who continues to be very prominent in this sport and lift another title for his mantlepiece. The Mens plate was won by Donald Pollard who beat Stevie Spargo 3 sets to 0, in a closer contest than the scoreline suggests. This tournament culminated with the final of the Mens Over 45 'tussle'!!! I use the word 'tussle', loosely as the two finalists, James Henderson and Donald Pollard had already played in various tough semi/finals, earlier in the day and there was a definite look of 'not today' apparent on their rose tinted faces. Nevertheless, they gathered themselves and produced a creditable final that James went onto win 3 sets to 0. Congratulations to everyone who took part and all the best for the future. Results
