Wick Inter-County - Season 2007-2008

Contents:- -HOME-|-AWAY-

Trophies remain in Thurso for second year - 20/01/08 - (HOME)

With the 'A' team match of the Thurso v Wick Squash Inter-County return leg hanging in the balance at 4 games all, and both teams providing their strongest squads, it looked promising for a hard fought afternoon of squash and something the expectant and accumulating audience waited in anticipation to watch, within the Thurso Club. But, the final result may not have been quite what everyone had expected, given the 'match-ups' in each section.

Unfortunately for Wick 'B', Thurso had gathered a 7-1 lead from the first round tie and it was always going to be tough to pull this sum back, away from home.

Thurso 'B' team captain, Stevie Spargo mentioned that he was more than happy with the performances from his side and how they conducted themselves in an excellent manner throughout the contest. Picking out a performance from the day, apart from his own tight tussle against Donald Durrand - which ended 3-2 in his favour, he was delighted to see young, Sean Miller win his tie against experienced opposition.

Wick continue to produce up-and-coming youngsters from their pack and a few of the future stars took part in this seasons event. To name but a few, Jamie and Dexter Durrand won their matches in the 'B' section and Liam Crombie picked up the only set in the 'A' event for Wick, against quality opposition.

The Thurso 'A' team ladies began the afternoon and blazed a trail for the men by winning all three matches, comprehensively.  Further good wins from 2nd to 5th pairings in the mens section for Thurso 'A' lead the way for the showpiece match of the day and, maybe a bit of pressure for the Thurso number 1 to complete a clean sweep.

As always, the feature game of the day is the first men's match in the 'A' team and it brought back together two competitors who previously battled against each other in the junior section of this event - namely, Martyn Cook and current county number one, Andrew Bremner.

The many traits that were apparent in their junior days have followed them through the years but, unfortunately, the umpire was the victim on numerous occasions of the players pride and anxiety to win this challenge match.

Without this temperament, the contest was a thrilling encounter, with both players giving it their all and using the court to stretch each other to their limits. On this occasion, it was Martyn who managed the court best, forcing his player into mistakes by pushing him from back to front in tireless rallies and at the same time keeping the ball tight, to win each point.  The Thurso top player eventually went onto win 3 sets to 0 and completed an 8-0 win on the day for the Thurso 'A' team. This was a massive boost for Martyn as he has been putting a lot of time and effort into his squash and it's good to see his hard work come to fruition.

A few players from the Thurso squad were unable to take part in the event and going on this performance, in both 'A' and 'B' teams, it will be difficult for them to rejuvenate their, or any position, after such a comprehensive show from the current Thurso team.

Congratulations to everyone who took part but I finish this transmission with a little reminder to ALL who got a little 'involved' on the day and forgot that we are but mere amateurs. These words come from the great Del Amitri, "Its better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all....." Work it out for yourself...!!!

Thurso comfortably win 'B' event but tie 'A' - 17/11/07 - (AWAY)

This first round of this seasons Wick Inter-County was slightly subdued due to the previous day's exuberance, involving Scotland battling to qualify for the Euro 2008 Championships.

Overall though, it was good to see a large number of juniors taking part in the event and pushing their senior counterparts to the limits.

The 'A' section culminated in a draw with some tight games and good performances throughout the fixtures.

The show match of the section between Andrew Bremner (Wick) and Ian Adamson (Thurso) gave the on-looking crowd the tantalising encounter they were expecting. With Ian moving two-nil up and having the upper hand in the third, it was looking like a win for the ex-Staggies man but Scorrie, Andrew pulled himself together, gasped for his second wind and went onto secure a 3-2 win.

Other noticeable triumphs came from Carole Mowat beating ex-county number 1 - Jane Cormack, Donald Pollard over young pretender, John Georgeson and Karen Campbell used her experience to lift the final point.

The Thurso 'B' side have more-or-less settled this side of the section with a 7-1 win.  Three of these games were settled with 3 sets to 2 wins, something that could've left the match wide open for anyone to lift.

Debutant, Dougie Wright got things rolling for Thurso against young, boisterous, Gavin Majilton.  Gavin started off like a rocket, went 2 sets to 0 up with Dougie only gaining 2 points from both and was then down 7-1 in the third.  After a few nervous transactions between both players, Dougie ploughed back the third and went onto win the match 3-2 with some excellent drop shots.  A good, entertaining start to the day and more was to come.......

Stuart Sutherland and Stevie Spargo were the other two to go all the way against 'the Hutch' and 'Happy Jappy', respectively.  Both proved to be physically and mentally demanding contests but at the same time, thoroughly entertaining.  The sort of matches the audience always like to see.......!!!

A comfortable win for Alistair Miller against James Georgeson concluded the 'B' match result and the play for this event.

Thank you to Wick for their hospitality and look forward to the second leg.
