Orkney Inter-County - Season 2007 - 2008

Contents:- -AWAY-|-HOME-

Both trophies have Caithness written on them - 29/03/08 - (Away)

A full squad of Caithness squash players travelled to Kirkwall, Orkney for the return leg of their Inter-County match.

Hopes were high that the Caithness 'B' team were going to be triumphant in their match, as the home leg score placed them with an 8-0 lead and only requiring 2 sets to secure the trophy.  But, the 'A' squad, with a 5-3 lead, were anxious on arrival as Orkney produced a very strong group of players that were capable of reversing the scoreline - and more.

A last minute restructuring of the 'B' side gave some of the younger county players debut appearances, a chance to blossom and perform to their best.  Although a majority of the scores did not go their way, the opponents they were up against certainly knew they were in a game and, the on-looking audience were appreciative of their efforts.

James Georgeson 'ground out' his young opponent and supplied the sole point for the Caithness 'B' side, which was sufficient to travel home with the trophy for the third year in-a-row.

The 'A' event culminated into one of the tightest finishes in a good number of years, with calculators at the ready, throughout the tie.

Donna Majilton and Ian Adamson, Caithness started off the proceedings with good wins but with a series of games going Orkney's way, 'squeeky-bum' syndrome was starting to set in - in the Caithness camp.  Although these games were lost, valuable 'sets' were being grabbed, which would eventually affect the final outcome.

Rather fittingly, it was down to someone who has had an excellent Badminton and Squash season to secure the title and take the plaudits for the Caithness 'A' side.

Carole Mowat had to win her match by 3 sets to 0, and after going 2 sets up everything looked rosy.  But, a determined battle back by Betty Stanger, Orkney took the win for Carole to the final point in a tie break of the third set, where she finished the match by winning 10 points to 9, 3 sets to love and giving Caithness the trophy by one set.

Thank you to Orkney for their hospitality, congratulations to all involved for a thrilling encounter and hope this continues in the years to come.

'B' have trophy in bag but 'A' have a lot of work to do - 24/11/07 - (Home)

Orkney travelled across the Pentland Firth and then onto Wick for the first round of the Caithness v Orkney Inter-County match.

On arrival, it became apparent that they had been hit by an unfortunate bout of last minute cancellations, forcing them to introduce some junior faces into their squad.  Although this was to be great experience for the travelling 'rugrats', there was a definite sign of delight from the Caithness contingent, especially the 'B' team.

Prior to this event, the Orkney squad would not have been aware of the controversy brewing in the home sides camp, causing 'physical and mental' stress on some of the athletes, vying for a position in the squad.  But, the Caithness 'B' team will travel North next year with a very strong lead, 8-0 and no sets lost in any of the matches - leaving them with, what can only hope, is an unassailable lead.

As the majority of the strong Orkney 'A' side managed to make it over for the tie - including, Scottish ranked, Adam Bews - this was always going to be a tough task for the home 'A' side.

James Henderson notched up a 3-0 win and gained the first point against Mik Swannie, in a tie that was closer than the result suggests.  Chris 'Funky' Taylor had a battle at fifth versus Colin Rendall but pulled away with a 3-0 win.  Martyn Cook had a match he would probably want to forget against the intelligent play and consistency of Adam Stanger but something he can look back on and improve for the future.  Likewise, the dominant, Adam Bews never let our county number 1, Andrew Bremner in with a chance of playing to his capabilities and cruised to a 3-0 win.  The contest of the day was to be between Ian 'Strawberry' Adamson and Ian Stout.

The 'Battle of the I's', brought a mixture of emotions, which gripped the players taking part and the ogling audience.

It looked like the Caithness, Ian had the match wrapped up and was ready for a refreshing pint but a curious refereeing decision completely turned the event.  Orkney, Ian noticed the annoyance had affected Strawberry and picked away point after point to eventually win this tough contest 3-2.

Finally, I would like to thank Orkney and their juniors for continuing to travel with a weakened team, Mackay's Hotel, Wick for their hospitality and Wick Squash Club for holding the event.
