Thurso Club Championships - Season 2006-2007 - 03&04/02/07
There was a definite sense of 'de-ja-vu' in this seasons Thurso Squash Club Championships as the Mens and Ladies' finals were populated with the same competitors and results as the previous year. The Mens plate final added a bit of spice with two new competitors vying for the trophy and the with the club's newly installed heating system providing tropical playing conditions, this brought a talking point to the event. James Henderson continued to be the dominant force within the Mens section and added another winners trophy to his impressive silverware collection but not without a push from Davie Swanson in the semi-finals, where both players battled for the 'T', jostled and provided some long, punishing rallies in the longest match of the tournament. Leslie Mackay, the club's league winner and number two ranked player, had already taken part in a tough semi-final match against the young up-and-coming, Ian Adamson, who is starting to show some promise for the future, and this may have affected his performance in the final. In the final, Leslie had the chance to punish James and take the first set with ease but with a serious of errors, James pulled his way back and grabbed this, and the following two sets, to complete a weekend of hard squash without losing a set. After a short conversation with the winner, James (a veteran, over 45) bringing up the suggestion of retirement, he commented in a Churchill-esque manner, "I shall never surrender, bring on the young ones....". Donald Pollard is always hungry for a piece of silverware, in any tournament, and this occasion was to prove no different. With a tough opposing competitor in Stuart Greig and an excellent match on the cards - which the crowd was looking forward to, Donald brushed aside any idea of a 'five-setter' and swiftly completed the job with a thrilling performance of power and precision to lift the Mens Plate trophy. Overall, in the Mens competition the insurgent pack provided an excellent weekends squash with good matches, to name but a few, from Sean Miller and Dougie Wright, Stuart Sutherland took a great scalp by beating Stuart Greig and Brian Farmer, Stevie Spargo and Martin Cook continue to impress and grow in confidence with every tournament. Carole Mowat and Carole Cameron were the only lady competitors to provide the
entertainment in the Ladies final. Carole M is now the dominant lady player
within the club and this was very apparent against Guinness Book of World
Records Holder for Most Club Championships won in one club, Carole C but not to
let the younger player run away with the trophy, Carole C put in a satisfactory
battle and accumulated a string of quality, experienced points to make her
opponent stretch and fight for all of the plaudits. Carole M lifted the
trophy with a trademark, deft touch at the front of the court which Carole C had
no chance of reaching.
