Veterans & Junior Championships - Season 2006-2007 - 24&25/03/07
Thurso Squash Club held its Annual Veteran & Junior Club Championships and keen competition was the order of the day in all age groups. The under 14 boys took part in a two league round robin event with the winners of each table playing in the final and the two runners up in the plate. The plate was won by Martyn Campbell - 2-1, defeating Gary Mann in a closely fought match with passions running high. The final saw Jamie Henderson defeat Jordan Farmer, 3-0. Though Jordan fought hard he was up against a gifted opponent, who has improved in leaps and bounds over the last year, playing a level of squash seldom seen in one so young and is surely one to watch for the future. In the girls match Lauren Gunn proved too strong for Lauren Sharp, winning 3-1. The under 18 Boys final between John Georgeson and Sean Miller was the match of the tournament. The skill, fitness and spirit displayed was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to witness this tussle which included, long rallies, power play, killer drop shots and a nail biting fourth game, which could've swung either way. It was one of those games you didn't want to end but John eventually wore down Sean, winning 3-1. The over 45's competition saw the usual suspects, James 'Birdie' Henderson and Donald Pollard going head to head, with no quarter given and none expected. The first game saw Donald come out like a tornado, chasing every ball and putting Birdie on the back foot, quickly winning 9-1. Could Donald maintain the pressure or would 'Birdie' ride out the storm??? As with all great champions Birdie raised his game and wore down his opponent, winning 3-1. The super vets saw Jim Cassidy up against Alan Williamson. Both players were up for this final and is always a fiercely contested trophy to win but Jim's fitness, long play and overall agility was the deciding factor pulling away to win 3-0. This was a big occasion for Jim as he has been battling to lift the 'Gold medal' in this tournament for a number of years without success but he is now hoping to continue his haul of prized treasure treats, in the coming years. Linda Sinclair, Thurso Squash Club member, graciously presented the prizes and thanks went to Alison Henderson who organised a well run tournament that ran like clockwork. The beauty of squash is that you can play it 24/7 -365 days of the year and as the competitions illustrate you are never too old. Why not give it a try, new members are always welcome. Results
