Taylor Handicap Trophy - Season 2005-2006 - 28&29/01/06
An entry of 29 keen squash players arrived in Thurso Squash club to try and have their name etched on the annual Taylor Handicap Trophy. With one winners trophy already sitting proudly at home on Donald Pollard's mantlepiece from the PB Ltd tournament two weeks previous, he went out full guns blazing for more silverware. Tough ties were in place for Donald to reach the final with opponents' handicap's varying throughout the rounds After managing to dispose of Alistair Miller in a tight quarter-final tie, which could've gone in any direction, and then young John Georgeson in the semi, it was onto the final against Les Mackay - where Donald would have a 6 point start. This was unusual for Donald, as most of the earlier rounds comprised of opponents with handicap's which he had to claw back. On the other side of the draw Les completed an enthralling semi-final win against the county no1, James Henderson - which may have paid the price for his final performance, with all the extra exertions imposed on him during this tie. Although Les struggled to provide the pace and penetration in the final, as he did in his semi-final clash, there was still some energy left in his tank to take the tussle to a three set match. But, with Donald giving away no favours and making sure the ball was warm at all times before serving, he punished Les in the final few points, forcing him into a mistake that cost him the title and handed Donald his second consecutive trophy of the season. If anyone has the chance of winning the 'Euro Millions' it could be Stevie Spargo. During the Plate competition Stevie was awarded more lifelines than 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' due to competitors injuries and numbering discrepancies. But, putting all that behind him, he managed to lift the trophy by beating Mairi Pollard, who also appeared in her second Plate final in consecutive tournaments. Mairi battled well to try and stop Stevie but he always had the upper hand and calmly finished off the match with a nice boast. Thurso Squash Club would like to thank the Taylor family for their continued support during the trophy fixture.
