Summer League 9 - 09 June 10

As the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club heads towards the half way stage the standard of scoring is hotting up, with the Standard Scratch Score going down by a shot on both days last week.

The week's best score was by Jack Johnstone with 42 points on Thursday.

Johnstone, playing off a 17 handicap, was only three over par at the turn in amassing 23 points and a further 19 points earned victory by two points from George Munro. Munro has been in impressive form this season and had a gross 74 on Thursday that gained 40 points, 20 in each nine.

If fishermen are to be believed, Stephen Fidler caught splendid trout on Wednesday and Friday last week. In between he had a splendid haul of 39 points in the Summer League for third place on Thursday. Fidler had two birdies in his inward nine of 22 points.

Newcomer Chris Sinclair, Clark Grant, Alan Swanson and Nicky Doherty were next best on 37 points.

Willie 'WJ' Shearer was in fine form on Wednesday, finishing two points clear of the chasing pack with a 40 point effort, 22 of those coming from the inward nine.

Count back placed Pat McVey in second place, Mark Mackay in third and Steve Grogan in fourth after all scored 38 points. Despite a blank at the eleventh hole, McVey had 20 points for his inward nine. Mackay (20 points) and Grogan (21) made their scores on the way out.

Mick Ross, Keith Dreaves and Doug Thorburn, with yet another gross 68, all scored 37 points.

An indication of how the League is shaping up is provided by the best six round scores to date. Graeme Henderson, Munro and Thorburn have all averaged better than 36 points per round. Impressive stuff!
