Summer League 22 - 11 September 10

There was some tremendous scoring in the final round of the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club on Saturday with pride of place going to Donald Sutherland with 43 points.

Sutherland made a good start and was only one over par after six holes but he slipped up at the seventh and eighth and had 18 points at the turn. He then proceeded to play a simply superb back nine of two under par with birdies at the thirteenth and eighteenth holes for 25 more points.

LtoR:- G McEwan, F Sparling, G Henderson (winner), T Mackay (sponsor), A Simpson & S Bremner.

Despite this brilliance Sutherland only won by a point from George Mitchell and Willie Mackay who finished in that order after count back. Mitchell had 21 points for each nine whereas Mackay had an outward total of 22 and 20 on the way in.

John Morrison, clearly coming to terms with the rigours of retirement, was next best on 41 points, two ahead of Donald Jack who coped with those rigours long ago.

All of the fancy scoring aside, the main questions on Saturday were all about the final positions in the League.

Few believed that Graeme Henderson could be caught and he wasn't. He didn't improve his total on Saturday but his very impressive 342 points for his best nine rounds was simply too much for the rest of the players to match.

Frazer Sparling and Jason Simpson shared second place going into Saturday's round and played together on Saturday. Both had 16 points on the outward nine but it was Sparling who prevailed with a two over par inward nine for 20 points and a two shot improvement on his total to finish second on his own.

Stephen Bremner, with 38 points on Saturday, and Sutherland moved into the top ten.

Final positions:-

  • 1 - Graeme Henderson - 342 points
  • 2 - F Sparling - 337
  • 3 - Jason Simpson - 335
  • 4 - Doug Thorburn - 334
  • 5 - Alan Swanson - 332
  • 6 - Stephen Bremner - 331
  • 7 - Donald Sutherland & Harvey Cowe - 330
  • 9 - George Munro - 328
  • 10 - Greg McEwan & Ronald Matheson - 327

For the record 1357 individual rounds were played and they yielded 636 birdies, seven eagles and a hole in one.

Some details of the last day:-

Frazer and Jason were on same points in 2nd place and on the final day Frazer bettered a score by two points taking outright 2nd place. Stephen Bremner jumped from 11th in to 6th place and Donald Sutherland jumped from 14th to 7th place.

Total Summer League 2010 stats:-

  • 1357 Rounds played
  • 636 Birdies
  • 7 Eagles
  • 1 hole in one
