North District Boys Championship for the RPB Bain Trophy - 05 July 09
Good conditions for North youngsters
Thurso Golf Club hosted a District Championship for the first time on Sunday when 42 boys from all over the North of Scotland enjoyed wonderful conditions for the event. The weather was perfect and the course earned widespread acclaim from all involved.
There was no shortage of quality players and the winning score would've graced any open competition.
That score belonged to Jamie Treasurer, a three handicap player from the Inverness club, who had a round of 68 and 65 to win by five shots from Jeff Wright (Forres) and Lyle McAlpine (Invergordon).
Wright had a very good 66 in the afternoon to claim second place from McAlpine who had the best morning round of 67.
The Under 16 section was won by Kingussie player Jordan Shaw with rounds of 72 and 70 with one of the Burgess brothers from Nairn, Sean, second with rounds of 71 and 72.
Kieran Mackay (Loch Ness) may have been one of the smaller players on Sunday but he made a big impact by winning the handicap section with two rounds of nett 63. Mackay who became thirteen on Tuesday had an early birthday present of a new handicap of twelve.
Craig Black (Inverness) had a super afternoon round of nett 61 to claim second place with nett 131. Black also featured in the winning Inverness team with Treasurer, Andrew Kenyon and Scott Murray.
The Caithness contingent mostly left themselves with too much to do after the morning round but all played to their handicaps or better in the second round.
Greg McEwan came closest to the prize list in finishing a shot behind the third placed player in the handicap section.
