Mens Tournaments - Season 2008-2009

Ulbster Cup Round 2 - 10 May 08
Young Sangster strolls to major win

Peter Sangster was an emphatic winner of Thurso Golf Club's, Ulbster Cup after scoring a nett 65.  A repeat of his score the week before, albeit from a lower handicap.

Sangster, clearly benefitting from additional coaching provided by the North District of the Scottish Golf Union over the winter, finished eight shots clear of first round leader Nicky Doherty and Keith Dreaves who returned a nett 69 for the second week in succession.

There was some fine scoring on Saturday.

Bob Robertson shared the lowest round of the day with Roddy Harper, with a gross 72, finishing a shot behind Sangster for second place.  Mark Parsonage, Dougie Wright and Harper, all had nett 67's.  Allyn Sutherland, just finishing a week's work experience at the Golf Club, and Brent Munro will also see their handicaps trimmed after nett 68's.

Ulbster Cup Round 1 - 03 May 08
Large entry for first round of Cup

There was a big entry for the first round of the prestigious Ulbster Cup at Thurso Golf Club on Saturday.

Sixty four players produced some fine scoring in windy conditions with the winner after tomorrow's second and final round likely to come from a group of ten that returned nett par or better.

Count back was needed to separate the day's top scorers, Nicky Doherty and Peter Sangster, after both returned excellent nett 65's to beat Ian Macphee, by a shot. It was Doherty who prevailed with a fine inward 37, that included a rare birdie three at the long sixteenth, following an outward 39.

Young Sangster also got to the turn in 39 and did little wrong on the way in to claim second place.

Macphee played some fine golf but a disastrous seven on the final hole undoubtedly cost him a higher placed finish.

Both Lachie Sutherland and Willie WJ Shearer played very steadily for their nett 67's while Keith Dreaves claimed the rest of the sweep money by beating the other four who also had nett 69's, on count back.

The day's lowest round belonged to course record holder Jim Sangster with a 74 that included birdies at the eighth, fourteenth and sixteenth holes.

David Dunbar showed that he is getting to grips with the Thurso layout by finishing a shot behind Sangster.
