Summer League 9 - 18&19 June 08
Jack Cracks the whip for big score...

Thurso Golf Club's Summer League seems to encourage remarkable scoring and this week was no exception, especially on Wednesday when the Competition Standard Scratch score went down by a shot.

Rookie Junior coach Jack McCracken was responsible for the week's top return of 43 Stableford points on Wednesday.

McCracken, playing off a 19 handicap, had used only five of those shots at the turn for a total of 22 Stableford points. His back nine was only marginally poorer, covered in a shot more for a point less. Good though the winner's outward nine was, it was not the day's best.

Twelve handicap player Trevor Henderson was in sparkling form and got to the turn in one over par and 23 points. Understandably, his inward nine was hardly as good but a very respectable 19 point haul gave him a total of 42 points and second place.

Walter Rutherford would seem to be a good man to have as a playing partner. At the weekend he accompanied Harvey Cowe to a victory in the JGC Open while earning second place himself. On Wednesday Walter's fine 39 point effort earned him third place but only by virtue of a better inward nine than playing partner Mick Ross. Jason Simpson, Bryan Sutter and Andy Costello all finished with 38 points, one ahead of the aforementioned Cowe.

Andrew Mackay earned a two shot handicap cut for his winning total of 41 points the following day. Despite getting no points at the long fourth, Mackay still had 20 points at the turn and got one more than that on the way in for 41 points to beat David Dunbar by a point.

Dunbar's was a fine round. Playing off five, he went to the turn in level par including back to back birdies at the seventh and eighth holes. His inward nine was only one over par and included a birdie at the short par four thirteenth hole.

Sandy Reid did his bit for the older brigade by beating Innes Mitchell and Alan Coghill on count back after all returned 38 points. Alf Williamson(37) was the only other player to beat the 36 point mark.

This week's rounds get the League to the half way stage and no doubt will feature more first class scoring.
