Summer Cup & Strokeplay Championship - Season 2008-2009
Summer League 20 - 03&04 September 08 Two questions came readily to mind as the final rounds of Thurso Golf Club's Summer League were approaching last week. Firstly, would the incredible scoring of many of the previous rounds be continued? And, secondly, would the leading total by Mark Parsonage be equalled or beaten? The answer to the first question was emphatically 'yes' particularly by Jim Meiklejohn on Thursday as he scored a very impressive one under par round of 68 giving the eight handicap man a winning total of 45 Stableford points, four clear of the rest of the field. Meiklejohn was two under par at the turn, courtesy of birdies at the third and eighth holes. Two more birdies were to follow on the way in, at the long tenth and the short fourteenth holes. Junior, Allyn Sutherland continued a very impressive run of form during the summer with 41 points for second place, getting down to an eleven handicap in the process. The next two places were filled by players at the opposite end of the age spectrum, Bob Black claiming third place with 39 points and Jim Hawthorn fourth with 38 points. Playing off a handicap of 19, Alan Kennedy went to the turn on Wednesday in 38 shots, only three over par, and got 24 Stableford points for doing it. Apart from a big number on the seventeenth hole, he scored well on the way in for a further 19 points and a winning total of 43 points to beat Doug Mackenzie, who had a first class round of gross 74, by a point. Course record holder Jim Sangster, was in impressive form, shooting 33 for both nines for a three under par round, as had Club Champion Doug Thorburn, and a total of 40 points for third place. This total was shared with Graham Harness who was lying third in the League going in to the final round. In a good day for the lower handicap players, Ewan Mackenzie had his best round for some time with a gross 71 earning 39 points, and Alan Swanson was a point further back on 38 points. And so to the second question, 'Would Mark Parsonage's 308 point leading total be equalled or beaten?' In fact it was both equalled and beaten. Alan Swanson improved by two shots to go alongside the junior player, who did not play the final round because of a hand injury, and Graham Harness added four points to an already superb total of 305 points to become the worthy winner of this year's league with 309 points. Meiklejohn's final round effort just failed to get him in to the prize list but Kennedy's score propelled him from 24th to seventh place and six point improvements by both Sutherland and Thorburn gained them fourth and eighth places respectively.
