Mens Tournaments - Season 2008-2009

Stuart Campbell Open sponsored by Ashley Ann - 26 July 08
Hot day brings good scores with it

The large number of competitors in the popular double header of open competitions at Thurso Golf Club, the Stuart Campbell Open sponsored by Ashley Ann and the Gala Open sponsored by We Frame It enjoyed the warmest weekend of the year with some hot scoring to match. The course, generally at its best at this time of year, was in absolutely magnificent condition.

Saturday was a harder day for scoring with a good breeze prevailing for most of the day resulting in the standard scratch score remaining at 69.

It obviously wasn't too hard for Ronnie Mowat and Lachie Sutherland who both returned excellent nett 64's to win the higher and lower handicaps respectively. The Stuart Campbell trophy went to Mowat, courtesy of the better inward nine.

Reay club championship finalist Lee Parnell began a fine personal weekend by winning the scratch award.

Mowat, a 19 handicap player, was seven over par for both halves of his round that was all fours and fives apart from a double bogey seven at the seventh hole that proved troublesome for a lot of players on Saturday.

Neil Jackson had a largely forgettable front nine but came storming home in one over par for a nett 65 and second place in the higher handicap category behind Mowat, beating Alan Coghill and Reay's, Liam Bremner on count back.

Sutherland had a wonderful front nine of one under par made up of eight pars and a birdie at the eighth hole. Perhaps understandably, his inward nine was hardly in the same class but it all added up to a gross 75, nett 64, that earned a win in the lower handicap category by a shot from Jim McLeod who had a very good gross 74.

Reay's, Cammy Ross was a shot further back for third place and fourth place went to veteran Donald Jack on nett 67.

Parnell had birdies at the fourth, tenth and thirteenth in his gross to beat Stephen Williamson into second place in the scratch category by one shot. Williamson had a particularly good one under par front nine with birdies at the sixth and eighth holes.
