J&G Sutherland - September Medal - 06 September 08
Skins wins after Stromness trip...

The early starters set the pace in Saturdays J&G Sutherland September Medal at Thurso Golf Club, taking advantage of calmer conditions than those that were to follow later in the morning.

Club Treasurer, Stephen Williamson, out at 7.00am, was counting the cost of four bogeys and a double bogey, at the long fourth hole, on his way to an outward total of 41, using up all of his six handicap. Undaunted, he set about the inward nine with relish and, having birdied the thirteenth hole, finished with three straight pars for a nett 70.

In the group immediately behind, George Mitchell, a nineteen handicap player, having opened with a double bogey six, played bogey golf for the rest of the front nine to be ten over par. On the way in Mitchell got a par at the thirteenth, a six at the sixteenth on his way to a handicap equalling nett 69.

Starting about three hours later, Alan 'Skins' Mackenzie also got to the turn in 45 shots but in more of a roller coaster manner than Mitchell with everything from pars at the fourth and eighth holes to a triple bogey at the third hole. Mackenzie steadied things up in the back nine though with pars at the thirteenth, fifteenth and last holes compensating for a six at the eleventh. All of this meant that Mackenzie equalled Mitchells nett 69 and, with a better inward nine, went on to win the Medal.

Williamson was rewarded with third place after count back from Davie Calder and Bob Black who also shot nett 70s.  Peter Sangster, Andy MacGregor, Gavin Souter and Innes Mitchell were next best a further shot away.

An indication of the challenging conditions was the days low round of 74 by Doug Thorburn who can normally guarantee a much lower score over his home course.
