September Medal - 06 September 08
Alistair wins final season medal

Just as the beautiful incantations of the harpes lured Odysseus and his intrepid sailors onto the rocks, so did the promise of a gloriously sunny day entice Reay's golfers onto the links, for the final Medal of the Summer Season - The September Medal. And all but a few had their hopes of glory dashed as a strong and bitter southerly swept ruthlessly across the course.

In category one, it was Reay Golf Clubs seasoned campaigners vying for the Medal. 3rd place went to Fred Groves, who's accuracy at the expense of distance policy worked a treat, with a battling 80 (8) 72 his reward. Club Council stalwart Jock Eunson managed to pip Fred for 2nd place with a credible round of 83 (12) 71.

The only man to beat the course and better his handicap on the day was Alistair Gunn, whose 76 (8) 68. Alistair manage to hole birdie putts at both the 13th and 15th on his way to the lowest gross score of the day and the laurels in category one.

It was the same story in Category two where experience thwarted the eager yet oft erratic advances of youth. In third place with a well crafted 84 (13) 71 was wily Bill Budding, narrowly edged out of second place by Willie Williamson 91 (20) 71 on count-back. But utilising his long-acquired knowledge of the links was David Gray, who managed to extract an net par round from the course with figures of 82 (13) 69.

Another notable occurrence during Saturday's play was Evan Sutherland's HOLE IN ONE at the 9th. Such was the strength of the wind that Evan required a 'michty blaw' with his trusty 3 wood (a rusty spoon in old parlance) to tame the 176 yard par 3.
