Club Championship Finals - 22 June 08
Parnell, Mackay and Prince become Champions

Reay Golf Club's Club Championship finals took place on Sunday in conditions set to test all involved. The forecast for wind and rain accurately described the conditions for the six finalists in the scratch, handicap and seniors categories, trying conditions for good golf.

The Club Championship was an evenly matched contest between Wilson Cup team mates Gavin Sutherland and Lee Parnell.

After halving the first Parnell drew first blood with a par at the second, Sutherland taking it back to level with a par at the short fifth.

The sixth and seventh saw them trading blows with Sutherland going ahead for the first time on the par five sixth and Parnell levelling it once again on the difficult seventh.

The scores remained level through the turn before Parnell eased ahead with par on the eleventh only to be pegged back to level once again on the very next hole. It was going to take something special to separate the pair as they battled on halving the next three holes in one under par.

Parnell finally broke the deadlock on the next driving to the edge of the short par four sixteenth. His second left him a testing ten footer, however, he proved himself up to the test and holed out for birdie to go one up.

Both in the rough off the seventeenth tee, Parnell managed to put his second shot close and with Sutherland left with a short putt for par, Parnell slotted home the three footer for his second birdie in a row and claim the honour of being Reay Golf Club's 2008 Club Champion.

Despite the inclement conditions both players should be congratulated on the high standard of golf played throughout the final. They were probably thankful there was no need for extra holes

Reay Golf Club Council provided both participants in the Handicap Championship with Club Treasurer Jock Eunson going head too head with House Convenor Bruce Mackay. A narrow win in this case for the man who looks after the bar, Bruce Mackay who becomes the Handicap Club Champion.

The Seniors Club Championship was between Scrabster's George Prince and Halkirk's Peter McCartney, McCartney one of the club's junior coaches was unable to overcome Prince in the damp and blustery conditions and George Price claimed the 2008 Senior Champion.

The trophies were presented in the clubhouse on the completion of all three finals by The club's Vice Captain Bob Earnshaw in the absence of Club Captain Ian Ross. Mr Earnshaw presented the trophies congratulating all the finalists on their efforts and thanked all those who braved the elements to provide the refereeing support.
