Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008
Captain v Vice-Captain Trophy - 31 March 07
The traditional opening to the new season always starts with the Captain versus Vice Captain match and the weather greeting the golfers was superb with crystal clear blue skies and no breeze to speak of, so conditions were ideal reminiscent of a summer day. It is officially summer as the clocks have changed. Ian Ross the new Captain in time honoured tradition hit the first ball witnessed by the gathered field and locked horns with the newly appointed Vice Captain Graeme Dunnett. The format for the day was four ball better ball and twenty teams contested the match. The top match was always going to be a tight affair and a tough school as Ian Ross and Jock Eunson halved the 5th in birdie two's. Revenge was sweet however for Ian after a ding dong match ended up with a 1 up win for the Captain. Ian was partnered by Alf Mackay the Club Chairman and Graeme by Jock Eunson the Hon.Treasurer. In match two John Nicolson birdied the 15th but not enough to prevent a 7-5 loss to Gavin Sutherland and Billy Dunbar and a point for the Captain. Alec Anderson playing on his own engineered the first point for the Vice Captain with a 1 up victory. Grant Maxwell birdied the 15th and Steve Efemey the 10th in a resounding win by 8 up for the Captain. Wily old campaigners Don Mackay (Snr) and John Disbury battled for a hard won point in a 1up win for a second point for the Vice Captain to keep the match tight with half the games played. Mojo birdied the 6th and partner Andy Mackay the 16th for a 3 up victory and the start of a rout for the Captain. Match 7 saw an honourable half and the end of points for the Vice Captain. Lee Parnell birdied the 11th with new member Bill Stockho from America, but this was not enough to stop a win for Colin Stewart and Cammie Ross with the grandstand birdie at the 18th and a 4-3 win. We thought we had Darren Clarke in the field but the look-alike was new addition to Reay in Brad Smith from the U.S. hiding behind a huge cigar and like the Ryder Cup player he knew how to find birdies securing four with putts dropping at the 6th, 10th, 13th and 16th. Brad partnered Gavin Gunn with a birdie at the 5th in a 6-5 win for the skipper. If he maintains this form Reay might have discovered a new Wilson Cup player. Alex Mackay and Colin Struthers brought home the final point to give the Captain a resounding win by seven and a half points to 2 and a half points and a winning start to the season.
