Wilson Cup - Thurso (Caithness) -
01 & 02 July 06
The Wilson Cup 2006 was hosted at Thurso GC. The draw put Reay into a very tough group along with Wick the holders, Whalsay and Thurso. The first match was against Wick and the pairing of Don Mackay and Raymond Taylor were up first against Ron Taylor and John Harper and Reay went one up. In the secondgame Graeme Dunnett and Lee Parnell won 4 up against Gregor Steven and Alan Forbes. So a very tough point was in the end won comfortably. In the second match it was difficult with the wind very strong and sadly Don mackay and Raymond Taylor went down by two holes to Graeme Sandison and Brian Polson of the Whalsay Club. Grame Dunnett and Lee Parnell won their game one up against Simpson and Jamieson and Reay lost the match by one hole unable to find that one win to force a play off for the point. Day two and Reay simply had to beat Thurso and beat them well to make the final. Don Mackay and Raymond Taylor went down by two holes to Alan Swanson and Dougie Thorburn. Fortunately Graeme Dunnett and Lee Parnell were in goodform and had a resounding 5 up win against Jom Sangster and Ronnie Mathieson to win the local derby match and make the final by by hole more than Thurso on aggregate. The Final was topsy turvey and Kirkwall were strong and into a quick lead which they held onto to the end. Don mackay and Raymond Taylor were getting a bit of a thumping but knuckled down against Rendall and Sinclair to pull it back in an exciting finish to finish up all square. In the other match Graeme Dunnett and Lee Parnell never recovered from a quick Kirkwall start and Peter McKinley and Martin Fleet although in trouble over the final holes clung on to win by 2 holes. Graeme Dunnett very sportingly offered a half to Kirkwall on the final green to give them a well deserved victory by two holes. It was nice to see an Island team win for the first time since 1995 when Kirkwall last won the Wilson Cup.
