Summer Cup & Strokeplay Championship - Season 2005 - 2006 Summer Cup Round 16 - 16 August 05 Round 16 sees the end of the qualification rounds for the Reay Summer Cup when the best 8 rounds from 16 are selected to determine the winners over the summer. Tuesday was an awful morning and few ventured out with the majority of the field waiting for the better weather in the late afternoon and evening. There was a stiff breeze but it too dissipated as the day wore on.
Division 2 had the best scoring but only one birdie as the majority of the field struggled. Andy Whitelaw put in a sound and efficient round to find the best gross of 85 and heads back offshore having played some excellent golf recently in the Club Championships to make the Handicap Final. Three of our higher handicap golfers put in great rounds and proved that effort and persistence will persevere with a cut for all in their handicaps. In third place is a new Member to the Club in David R.Craig with a steady 92-25-67 to break par and get his best finish and he was understandably delighted with his round. Two players were tied on nett 64 and the dreaded countback over the last 9 holes came in to separate them. Willie Williamson had to settle for second place with 86-22-64 but had the distinction of dropping the only birdie putt in Division Two at the longest hole on the course the par 5 fourth. This was particularly noteworthy as the 4th hole on examination of the course analysis was playing the hardest on the day. Coming out on top and getting the nod for first place was Willie Young playing excellent golf to card figures of 89-25-64 and the satisfaction of a new handicap of 23. Willie has made an impressive improvement in form over the season and it's not over yet as he is in the final of the Matchplay Quaich where he meets Peter McCartney. Making birdies in Division One with putts falling at the 13th were Gavin Sutherland and Colin Stewart but both out of sorts and neither in challenging form. Grant Coghill is another not firing on all cylinders but finding the green at the short 15th for a tap in birdie for the highlight of his round. Andy Mackay playing steadily secured third place in Division One with 83-12-71. Only two broke par with nett 67's and once again the back 9 countback had to be invoked to find a winner. David Gray a veteran stalwart at the Club had a great evening with back to back birdies at the short 5th for a two and the 6th which is Braid's choice for a birdie four. This set up David with a superb outward 9 of 36 shots in his 79-12-67 after a double bogey on the first. A bad double on the 14th and another blip at the 16th cost David the top spot. With the lowest gross of the evening of 76 Cammie Ross won Division One with equal halves of 38 for a steady 76-9-67. No birdies in the round but a string of tidy pars and the only blemish on the card a double bogey at the 3rd to grind out a terrific score and rekindle some of his best form in time to tackle the Safari at the weekend.
