Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010

David Allan Shield Quarter Final - 03/08/09
Halkirk 1 - 4 Wick Groats

Spike

The Wildcat's hopes of claiming silverware in 2009 were ended following this heavy defeat by the league leaders at Recreation Park.

Sexy made a couple of changes to the side that beat Pentlands in the last round, as he looked to secure a win against a very good Groats side.

Once again there was a pretty strong breeze blowing which ment the conditions weren't the best for good football. But, this perhaps helped us early on as the visitors struggled to play their usual neat passing game.

After a bright start, we took an early lead with one of our first efforts on goal.

Spike broke from the halfway line, beating a couple of men, before curling an effort into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance.

We were well on top at this stage and almost doubled the lead soon after.

Mikey saw his effort blocked by a defender but the rebound fell to Kitten who fired in a shot that flashed just wide of the post.

We remained on top for the opening half hour and Charlie and Bainer both had decent efforts but failed to trouble the keeper.

The visitors started to work their way back into the game and had two great chances to get level but their shooting was slightly off target.

Mikey then flashed a shot just wide off the upright as we looked to increase our lead before the break.

Half Time 1-0

With the visitors having enjoyed the majority of possession in the final 15 minutes of the first half, we knew we would be in for a hard time if we were to hang on for the win and, progres to the semi final.

This was proved to be the case, as Groats came out, dominated more or less the entire second half and although it took them a while to get a goal, they finally pulled one back just after the hour mark.

They then went for the winner and got the decisive goal with around 15 minutes left when we failed to deal with a high ball.

Then, as we went looking for an equaliser to take the game into extra time, they scored two goals in the last five minutes to put the result beyond any doubt.

A very disappointing way for our season to more or less end, as yet again we get knocked out of a cup competition following a pretty feeble performance.

Again, there didn't seem to be enough passion and commitment for the cause, although there was plenty on display in the opening period of the game as we were very much the better side at that time.

We were very much second best after the break and Groats thoroughly deserved their win, although the final scoreline probably flattered them a bit.

We're left with three league games now and hopefully we can go on and win all of these as we look to finish the season as high up the table as possible.

Go Wildcat's!!
