Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010

League Division 1 - 24/08/09
Halkirk 4 - 2 Thurso Pentland

Charlie secures top goalscorer award.

We finish our season off with a fifth successive league win that sees us secure 4th place in the league, our highest finish in quite a few years.

It was far from being a good performance with many of us off the pace and we struggled to beat the already relegated Pentlands.

We started the game sluggishly and it was no real surprise when we fell a goal behind.

Some poor pieces of defending saw us twice fail to clear when we had the opportunity and Pies was left with no chance with a shot from twelve yards.

We were extremely poor on the night, with too much gurning going on between the players, a distinct lack of football being played as we struggled to pass the ball about and seemed happier to try and run with it too much or try a fancy pass rather than keeping things simple.

Charlie did go close to getting us back on level terms but his free kick from the edge of the box was well parried by Alan Mowat in the visitors goals.

Bainer & Spike both went close with efforts but we went in at the break one behind.

Half Time 0 - 1

Duck rises high to win header.

Despite a few stern words from Sexy at half time, we almost fell behind with the first action of the second half but Pies produced a wonderful point-blank save to keep the scoreline at 0-1.

It wasn't long before we got ourselves in the lead, with both goals coming from the penalty spot following fouls on Charlie.

Charlie himself took the first spot kick as he stretched his lead in the top goalscoring chart and then Gavin took responsibility for the second pen, as he continues to try and banish his poor effort against Avoch from his memory!!

We were now the better side at last and should've increased our lead further but it was in fact the visitors that scored next to get back on level terms at 2-2.

Pies was again left helpless as he was beaten by a fine volley.

We soon restored our lead, when Butch capitalised on a defensive mistake to expertly pick his spot in the far corner with a nice side-footed finish.

The result was put beyond doubt when Gavin (playing in what many believe to be his last game of his career) scored with a trademark howittzer into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Another three points to finish off the season but a far from satisfactory performance, with several players struggling to meet the level of performance we've come to expect.

The fact that we could still go on and win the game and secure the three points, when a lot of guys are off-form is perhaps the only real positive that we can take from the game.

Go Wildcat's!!

report provided by Liam Bremner

Pies touches a powerful free-kick over the bar.

Young Muttley strikes the post.

Charlie steps up confidently for penalty kick.....

.....and sinks his penalty past ex-Halkirk keeper, Alan Mowat.

Gavin decides to take second penalty.....

.....and cooly sends the ball past the keeper.
