Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2009-2010
League Division 1 - 18/05/09
John O'Groats 2 - 1 Halkirk

Yet another league defeat for us, although this was a sore one to take as just like the previous week we should've taken something from the game.
The home side had the wind advantage, in the first half and used this to play their usual long ball game to try and put us under pressure but the defence, with Gavin in his new role of sweeper, were coping comfortably with most of their attacks.
We were more than matching them for effort and commitment and should've taken the lead with the first real opening of the game.
Kitten made a great run down the right, cut inside to get a sight of goal but the angle proved too tight and he fired into the side netting.
Mikey then did well on the counter attack and was able to tee up Adamson just inside the box but he snatched at his shot and it went well wide.
JOG started to apply a bit of pressure around the half hour mark with a succession of corners that were proving difficult to defend, due to the wind.
Just when it looked like we had seen off the danger, JOG took the lead by scoring direct from a corner kick.
This was a real sickener for us ten minutes before the break and went in at half time behind when we should've been level.
Half Time 1 - 0
The second half was still a very even contest although we didn't seem to make as much use of the wind behind us as they had.
We did enjoy plenty of the possession but failed to create any clear cut chances and almost paid for it around the hour mark.
Brenda lunged in to a challenge just inside the box but took the man rather than the ball and the ref awarded a penalty kick (despite originally saying it was outside the box and giving a free kick).
This could've put the game beyond us had they scored but Pies got down low to his right and made a fine save.
This gave us a boost and should've been level when Mikey broke clear but unfortunately the chance fell to him on his left side, went for power rather than placement and the ball flashed wide of the post.
We kept going though and deservedly got level ten minutes from time.
Charlie went on a great run, beating a couple of defenders before he was scythed down just inside the box and the ref had an easy decision to give us a stonewaller penalty.
Gavin walked up from the back and expertly found the top corner.
Just when we thought we had done enough to get a point from a difficult venue, we fell behind almost immediately.
Gavin played a pass back to Pies but the keeper failed to deal with it convincingly and his attempted clearance fell straight to the feet of their striker and he had the easy task of rounding pies and rolling the ball into an empty net.
This was a devastating blow for us, having just levelled, losing our discipline a bit in the final few minutes. Kitten saw red for a late challenge and then Gav was perhaps fortunate to stay on the field, aswell after a petulant kick.
We didn't create any more chances and it was yet another hard luck story.
Another good performance from the team but yet again we've gone unrewarded.
We did miss a few chances in this game but yet again the soft goals we're conceding are killing us.
The effort, work-rate and commitment can't be questioned though and hopefully we can get Bainer & Stevie C back in the team for next weeks big game against Rovers and we can get a much needed victory and three points.
Go Wildcat's!!!
