Halkirk FC - Reports, Results & Photos - Season 2008-2009
Rural League - 03/04/08 The first rural league match of the season was played at a pretty soft and heavy Recreation Park. Suspensions and work commitments meant 4 first choice players were missing, but were still able to field a fairly strong team including new signing, Gavin Bremner. We didn't really get off to the best of starts as Poop wasn't available and Gunny, who was taking his place in goals, was arriving late as he was working. Therefore we started the game with 10 men and Adamson took over between the sticks until Gunny arrived. This 10 minute cameo appearance in goals means that it's now official that Casper has played in every position for the team since he arrived last year! eBiGH were pretty slow to get going in the first half and struggled to play any decent football, although this was maybe understandable due to it being the first game and also taking into consideration the condition of the pitch. We went in at the break one nil down when JOG sprung our offside trap, Gunny could only parry their first effort and their player was left with a tap in. Half Time 0 - 1 There was an improvement in the second half though. Halkirk battled for the whole game against a very physical Groats team, but also played some better football, showing more composure on the ball and got more width into our game. We started to push for an equaliser and Spike went the closest as he released the ball out wide and continued his run into the box to meet the cross and his header came back of the base of the post. Halkirk went level with about 20 minutes left. Rusty did well to keep the ball alive following a corner and his driven cross was turned into the net from close range by Luke. We continued to be the better team for the remaining period and both young subs, Banksy & the Butcher went close with their first involvement in the game. A good work-out for the boys for the first game of the season but it was obvious that the football and the fitness both need to be improved. Weather permitting, we'll get another couple of games in next week before the competitive action starts.
