Yell Open - Season 2005-2006 - 07 & 08/04/06

It was almost inevitable from the opening crazy but comical confrontations in Inverness Airport involving a pair of scissors that turned into a sword and the female flight announcer, who obviously had the 'painters in' - that this trip was going to be marked down in the Archive books as one of the best 'Well, Hell, Yell' travelling experiences known in CBA history and, there was the Keith twinzzzz' 45th birthday party on Saturday night.

Four hardy souls continued to fly the CBA flag to Shetland, which included the three original members who uttered those infamous but maybe fatal words a number of years ago, "What is the population of Lerwick...???" - namely, the King of Swing, James 'Bird' Henderson, Sky Sports himself, Mark 'Ratter' Mackay and the sensible one, Daisy Swanson. The final member of this seasons group was the King of Cool, Abdul Mkith who has the infectious touch of making girls horny (so he thinks) and hasn't got a mobile phone big enough to hold ALL the ladies' phone numbers.

We were also joined this time around by a group from Orkney who had heard about this legendary Yell experience and wanted to test the water. Their squad included Robbie Norquoy, (a fellow Tim) who is more commonly known as 'Turkey' to his orcadian compatriots but on Saturday night had a bout of 'bird flu' and had to be put down early. Eric, is the young conversationalist from Orkney and is destined to be a talk show host in future years, who also baffled Robbie and myself on numerous occasions with his Grand National knowledge!!! Gail Bremner is the Laird of an island in Shetland but is destined for travelling. Finally, Derek Manson and Lisa Johnson. No, they are not a couple but they work together - well, they send e:mail's to each other the whole week. Derek was fortunate enough to receive a brand new nick-name but it can only be understood when heard. Lisa continually informed us that she would be going to the next Island Games in Rhodes to play Beach Volleyball and was not sure what style of g-string she/the team would be wearing. I'll leave you all to wonder about that one.......

Well, Hell, Yell - better say something about the badminton now, eh.....

Looking at the starting line up in ALL of the draws, a lot of people would've agreed it had treble winning prizes for two of the players, Mark Mackay and Shona Keith, written on the trophies.

Mark Mackay managed this accolade with partners James Henderson - Men's Doubles beating Jason Jamieson & Gordon Keith in a close two game final, Shona Keith - Mixed Doubles beating Anne Wood & Jason Jamieson and a win in the final of the Men's singles against tough competitor, Gordon Keith.

Shona had a slightly tougher task and Annette Gear was there to cause this upset and lift the Ladies' Singles trophy. Annette proved to be the more experienced player and put together a sequence of decisive shots to end the young favourites hopes of lifting a treble.

There was no further loss of games on Shona's part for the rest of the weekend - as she played an influential part in winning the Ladies' Doubles with partner Anne Wood beating Annette Gear & Tammi Shields and Mark Mackay in the Mixed Doubles.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Yell committee for a superb buffet, hospitality & organisation, Tammi for accommodation, everyone else involved for a brilliant weekend and the young Keith lassie for lending me her hair band when I was dancing and providing an exhibition on forward roles, much appreciated. See you next year.

So, what is the story with the scissors, I hear you say? Well, as everyone knows when you go on trips like this - there is only so much that is allowed back. The scissor story stays where it is......
