County Open - Season 2002-2003 Casey Lifts two trophies... 28,29 & 31/01/03 The County Championships are always set to run for two consecutive days, singles the first night followed by level and mixed doubles - but, this year due to the high standard of badminton played and long rallies, the mixed doubles final had to be completed on a THIRD night during a county practice. The singles competitions went to form with Carole Mowat lifting the Ladies competition against a hardy Jane Grant. James Henderson had a stiffer task against the young pretender, John Durrand, who's text book badminton proved difficult for the 'work-horse' to penetrate. But after a long match Bird lifted the title 2 sets to 1. Casey and Carole were never in doubt of lifting the ladies doubles title and did so by winning a round-robin competition. Alison Henderson and Pam Bain took the runners-up spot from a pool of six couples. > A well matched Mens Doubles final could have gone either way. Sam and John looked more in control throughout but Bird and 'Red Cheeks' (Davie Nic) were never going to let the Wick partnership have an easy ride. After countless long rallies and excellent pick-ups, it was Sam and John who clinched the doubles title. The mixed doubles went on to a third night, which made a few participants happy because of the amount of energy they had lost in previous matches, left them exhausted. The only person wishing it had continued was Casey because she was still buzzing after a good win against Alison and Birdie, in the semi-final. She need not have worried though because Davie and herself have played together for so many years now, that they could play with blindfolds on and still know where each other should be standing and how to finish off their opponents, almost ninja style - you know what I mean...... Getting back to it, though. Sam and Pam were never going to let them have it easy but 'e Ninja's played a 'cross court style game' which rattled them and took the mixed doubles trophy home to show their better halves. (Sorry no picture. will get one later). It was also excellent to see Pammie back and competing after having her little lassie, at such a short time.
